A Year In The Life Of Our Vineyard
A Year in the Life of Our Vineyard
At Bride Valley Vineyard, every season brings its own rhythm, challenges, and beauty. From the first frost to the final harvest, the vineyard is constantly evolving - and so is the work behind the scenes. Here’s a look at what happens throughout the year in our corner of Dorset as we nurture our vines and produce English sparkling wine with character and care.
Winter: Rest for the Vines, Work for the Team
While the vines sleep, our team is busy. After the final leaves fall, the vineyard enters dormancy - but for us, winter is far from quiet.
Pruning begins in earnest, and this meticulous task is one of the most important of the year. Each vine is carefully cut back to promote healthy growth and ensure balance in the season ahead. This winter alone, our team pruned and tied down over 50,000 vines.
Winter is also a time for planning - everything from soil management and sustainability projects to visitor experience improvements (this year’s highlight: the arrival of posh loos in the vineyard!).
Spring: Bud Burst and New Beginnings
Spring marks the start of a new growing season - and with it, a sense of anticipation.
By April, we watch closely for bud burst: the moment when tiny green shoots emerge, bringing the vineyard back to life. It's an exciting, yet anxious time, as these delicate buds are vulnerable to frost. Fortunately, our coastal location offers some natural protection.
We also focus on the health of the vineyard environment. This year, we’ve planted new hedgerows - a traditional English mix of hawthorn, hazel, sweet briar rose, blackthorn, and beech - to encourage biodiversity and protect the vines from wind.
Summer: Growth, Bloom, and Canopy Management
By summer, the vineyard is lush with growth. Flowering takes place, followed by fruit set -when tiny grapes begin to form.
Our focus now shifts to canopy management. We train the vines to grow in a way that maximises airflow and sunlight, keeping the grapes healthy and disease-free. This summer, we’re trialling new trellis systems with master pruners Simonit & Sirch, experimenting with spacing, reflective materials, and bare soil techniques to adapt to warmer, more unpredictable weather.
Summer is also when we welcome guests for vineyard tours, offering tastings among the vines and sharing the story of Bride Valley with wine lovers from near and far.
Autumn: Harvest and Celebration
Autumn is the culmination of all our efforts. As the grapes ripen, we monitor them closely for flavour, sugar, and acidity - waiting for the perfect moment to harvest.
Harvest time is fast-paced and exciting, with teams moving quickly to pick grapes at their peak. The fruit is then taken to the winery, where the journey from grape to sparkling wine begins.
After harvest, the vines begin to wind down once more, storing energy for winter dormancy. It’s a time of reflection, celebration - and perhaps a well-earned glass of wine or two.
A Living, Breathing Landscape
A vineyard is never still. From the quiet of winter to the buzz of summer, each season brings something new. At Bride Valley, we work with nature - not against it - crafting wines that reflect our land, our climate, and the care we put into every step.
Whether you’ve walked our rows before or are planning your first visit, we invite you to follow the vineyard’s journey throughout the year - and raise a glass with us to the next chapter.
Book a tour, explore the vines, and experience the beauty of the vineyard year for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you.
