Vive la renaissance
Reviving the spirit of 1973
Much of my time over the last few months has been devoted to the revival of L’Academie du Vin, the centre of excellence in wine appreciation and education that I first established in Paris in 1973.
L’Academie was where my long-standing colleague Patricia Gastaud-Gallagher and I hosted the now-legendary Judgement of Paris. (We challenged some of France’s greatest wine experts to a blind tasting, pitting their best wines against those emerging from California. California came out on top and a new era in wine was upon us.)
L’Academie was re-born here in the UK last autumn, with the aim of once-again delivering the gold standard in wine appreciation that we became known for around the world. (It helps that despite being dormant here in the UK for some time, the AdV name has remained so well-respected globally; the AdV in Tokyo which I founded in 1987 recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.)
One of the main experiences will be a four-session course at 67 Pall Mall, the flourishing Wine Club housed in a Lutyens-designed building. The course will be created by Master of Wine Nancy Gilchrist, the principal lecturer at the Christie’s Wine Course which I founded, based on the courses of l’Academie in Paris, in 1982, and will cover the following:
- The Sleek Internationals: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Burgundy and Beyond.
- The Social Mixers: Cabernet and Friends. Bordeaux and Beyond.
- The Rhone Rangers: Rhone and Mediterranean grapes at home and abroad.
- The Cool Pioneers: cool climate grapes making their mark around the world.
We’re also planning an AdV road show with Eduardo Chadwick, showcasing English sparkling wines and his iconic range from Errazuriz. This will take place in June in London, then Paris, Berlin and Moscow and on to Asia in September.
Every AdV event will be headed up by one of our well-respected partners: Patricia and I are joined at L’Academie by Marc Nadeau (from Canada), Mark Williamson (Willi’s Wine Bar and Maceo in Paris.) Sarah Kemp, my boss at Decanter for very many years, will join us this September.
